About Sue
Sue Carter Flinn is a Toronto-based writer and editor. Her journalism has appeared in a variety of national publications and websites, including: The Globe and Mail, Readers’ Digest, Telegraph Journal, cbc.ca, Quill & Quire, Canadian Art, maisonneuve.org, Alternatives Journal, Fuse, Spinner, HGTV.ca and CAA magazine. She covers mostly arts, architecture, film, style, travel and music, but also has experience writing online and print news, health and lifestyle features.
In 2011, Sue relocated to Toronto from Halifax to take a full-time position as the first web editor at Quill & Quire, Canada’s publishing trade magazine, and as the freelance arts editor for This Magazine.
Before Q&Q she was employed at The Coast (2004-2011) as the alt-weekly’s arts editor, responsible for its music, film and arts sections. From 2003-2010, she was also editor of Visual Arts News, a nationally distributed magazine dedicated to visual art in Atlantic Canada (36 pages, tri-annual), and the Halifax reviewer for Akimblog, the publishing arm of Akimbo.ca.
Prior to her life as a journalist, she worked as a communications specialist for the Textile Museum of Canada in Toronto and before that, travelled the world for a now-deceased company (R.I.P.), organizing events for show biz execs in Amsterdam, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, New York and Toronto. Sue is also an experienced grant writer and researcher, hired by various arts organizations for documentation and collection cataloguing.
AWARDS
Sue was awarded the 2007 Atlantic Journalism Award for Arts & Entertainment Reporting for a feature on photographer George Steeves, which appeared in The Coast. In 2008, she received the silver AJA for her story on rising art star David Harper and the 2009 silver award for a story on Halifax’s amateur comedy scene. In 2010 she was nominated for Media Professional of the Year by Music Nova Scotia.
In 2007, she was awarded a CFAT Media Arts Scholarship and created a short animated video, and in 2010 was selected to attend the Screenwriters’ Bootcamp to complete the first draft of a screenplay. In her first year as web editor at Quill & Quire, the magazine’s website won Canadian Online Publishing Awards for News Coverage (gold) and Best Overall Website (silver) in its category.

JURIES & VOLUNTEERING
Juror for the Polaris Prize, SOCAN’s Echo Songwriting Prize, Centre for Art Tapes, Halifax Pop Explosion, Nocturne Arts Festival, Atlantic Book Awards, Music Nova Scotia. Sue served on the board of directors for Eyelevel Gallery (2004-07) as co-chair, and was a founding organizer of the popular Halifax artist-studio tour, Go North! and Dear Diary, a popular reading series. She has hosted many events, including Word on the Street.
