WatchWatch
Art 21 episode featuring Mike Kelley. This was a pretty awful day, with the news of Kelley’s death and that of Soul Train’s Don Cornelius. As my astute husband pointed out, these are “two figures, both important to ‘movements,’ or cultural communities, ending their lives.”

Tale of Sand in the Globe and Mail
My story on Toronto artist Ramón Pérez, who was selected to illustrate Jim Henson’s last unproduced screenplay, appears in Saturday’s Globe and Mail. As someone whose Muppet fandom is probably beyond the normal (we played “Rainbow Connection” at our wedding), talking to Lisa Henson was a huge deal.

Just like Kanye
Quillcast is a new podcast series from Quill & Quire featuring behind-the-scenes conversations with authors and publishing insiders. We’ve been recording the sessions at the amazing space, The Orange Lounge in Toronto, where Madonna, Queen Latifah, Kanye West, and Tori Amos have also recorded. But yeah, we’re talking books. To date, I’ve interviewed authors Andrew Westoll...

Interview: Paul Rowan, Umbra
I bet if you looked around, there’s at least one Umbra product in sight. I counted two Umbra garbage cans in the room when I interviewed Paul Rowan, co-founder of one of Canada’s most successful design companies. Story for the Telegraph Journal.

New review: Stephens Malone, Big Town
Occasionally, like the other morning on the Queen streetcar when a man tried to sell me his doll for $100, I miss Halifax. I’ve tried to remain connected to the local arts scene, beyond just gossip from friends and family. Here’s a review I wrote on Stephens Malone’s new novel Big Town, which appears in the latest issue of Atlantic Books Today.

Honoured for the honourable mention
Found out my short story won an honourable mention at the Atlantic Writing Competition this year. Someone doesn’t care.

Rebekah Higgs: Odd Fellowship
Recently I wrote a bio for Rebekah Higgs’ new album, Odd Fellowship. It’s a funny experience seeing your words quoted in articles, but there you go. The album is fantastic – I’m sure you’ll be hearing a lot more about Rebekah Higgs in the future.

Coogan's trip
Wow, someone else obviously has a crush on Steve Coogan: NOW gave The Trip five stars. In 2008 I interviewed Coogan - he plays so many arseholes I didn’t know what to expect from sexy Jesus, but here we are.

Manga madness
Moby Lives picked up on a story I’ve been following for Q&Q about Canada customs stopping artists and consumers of explicit manga and violent comic books. They ask wisely: At what age can a cartoon legally have sex?

NXNE reviews
It was great to accessorize with a lanyard for last week’s NXNE - I love the publishing world, but I miss my music guys a lot. So it was a weekend of nostalgia, and not just for Evan Dando and Juliana Hatfield. Read our NXNE reports.

The Art of Trespassing gets attention
The Art of Trespassing (Invisible Publishing), a book of short stories that I contributed to way back when, is starting to pop up in a few places. It made a list of “Books to help you find your way around a new city” on Canadian Bookshelf, and was reviewed on Rabble.ca.

Chimps and Punks
This week I wrote a story celebrating the life and work of Toronto lit-punk icon Daniel Jones. I was introduced to his raw, honest work a few years ago, so it’s great to see two more of his releases reaching new audiences. Also, a story I wrote for CBC.ca on Andrew Westoll’s The Chimps of Fauna Sanctuary is up on the website. Warning that this book is an emotionally hard read, but...
