My fascination with fandom and collectors’ obsessions (and my lack of media pass) has led to my new project. I’m going to all the TIFF red carpet events to take photos of people taking photos of celebrities. I’m not bringing my good camera, or worrying about settings, lighting, etc., because fans don’t care (except for those weird middle-aged hobbyists with the $1,000 lenses). The quality of the photos really doesn’t matter, I discovered - listening to conversations in the crowd tonight, people really are happy capturing part of Ryan Gosling’s arm, or the top of Clooney’s head. Beyond the paparazzi and the eBay autograph-seekers (that’s another story), there’s a predatory hunger that makes me feel slightly uneasy and a little giddy.
