Tonight in Toronto is the North American premiere of the Thomas Struth and Candida Höfer documentaries. This will be amazing on a large screen.

So many lucky stars waiting for Madonna; a much more civilized crowd blinds Vanessa Paradis with their flashes.

Roger Ebert slips slowly by a crowd. No one can hear James Franco speak, but they’re there for other reasons, anyway. A grandmother calls to “Emily” like a seasoned paparazzo. That was Sunday.

Gosling. Lively. Clooney. Lewis. Moretz. Today I saw two pushing matches, another woman apparently had someone drop on her head while jumping off a lamp post, another woman almost choked from a random camera strap. Is it worth it? Yes, they all said, adamantly.

My fascination with fandom and collectors’ obsessions (and my lack of media pass) has led to my new project. I’m going to all the TIFF red carpet events to take photos of people taking photos of celebrities. I’m not bringing my good camera, or worrying about settings, lighting, etc., because fans don’t care (except for those weird middle-aged hobbyists with the $1,000 lenses). The quality of the photos really doesn’t matter, I discovered - listening to conversations in the crowd tonight, people really are happy capturing part of Ryan Gosling’s arm, or the top of Clooney’s head. Beyond the paparazzi and the eBay autograph-seekers (that’s another story), there’s a predatory hunger that makes me feel slightly uneasy and a little giddy.

One of the toughest stories I’ve ever written about a talented young woman who exposes her eating disorder through her photography. Read about her here.
